Benefits - Water & Carbon CO2e Saving

Traditional urinals literally flush around 217 billion litres of clean water down the drains annually – an amount that is more water than the UK’s largest reservoir. But why is it important to increase our water-saving efforts? Out of all the water in the world, it is estimated that only 2.5% of it is fresh, drinking water. So, if your urinal system is flushing away over 200 billion litres of the very same water per year, it is a huge waste that can have a knock-on effect on the health of the planet.

The most water you can
save at work

One of the main global issues related to water scarcity is the
high number of people who do not have access to fresh drinking water or a flushing toilet. According to the CDC, 11% of the world’s population don’t have access to clean drinking water, while an estimated 25% of the global population do not have access to adequate sanitation. This is an issue that needs to be addressed, and change needs to happen.

In 2019, Sir James Bevan, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency, stated:

“Wasting water is set to be as socially unacceptable as blowing smoke in the face of a baby. In 20 – 25 years, we will reach the jaws of death, the point at which, unless we take action now, we will not have enough water to supply our needs.”

If we continue to waste water in the manner that we are, we will be facing a global crisis as we have never seen before.

Significantly reduced
carbon footprint

So, why would we continue to waste water if an effective alternative is available?

Reducing the amount of water that is flushed through the system in turn reduces the amount of sewage and pollutants produced and processed. Water companies require a lot of energy to process and treat water. It is estimated* that in the UK, 2,266 kilotons of carbon dioxide equivalent are produced per year, which is the equivalent to the average annual emissions of 377,598 cars.

Environmentally friendly
cleaning products

By removing the need for vast amounts of water in your urinal systems, CO2 emissions will be greatly reduced, which can contribute to your business hitting its green targets.

The SteriKleen spray is environmentally friendly and, in combination with our High-Performance Key-Valve, means that your need for cleaning products will be reduced. Another tick in the box for a Smarti waterless solution thanks to needing fewer cleaning products, further decreasing the environmental impact your business will be having on the planet.

If not now, when?

These changes cannot happen overnight, and it is important to understand why these changes needed to be made to reduce water wasting. As Dr Heather Smith of Cranfield Water Science Institute, Cranfield University states:

“Behaviour change is a vital part of the equation to help address looming water scarcity, but it doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time for new behaviours to become embedded as new habits, and that process often requires support and reinforcement from a lot of different sources.”

Smarti Environmental’s waterless urinal technology not only helps organisations to reduce their Scope 3 emissions, but it also saves each hundreds of thousands of litres of water every year.
